Gun Attack Claims Two More Lives In Mombasa, Kenya 48 Hours After Likoni Shooting

Two people have been confirmed dead with two others injured following a shooting incident at Sega bar in the Majengo area of Mombasa county, according to a report in the Nairobi-based Star.

The attackers who are said to have been masked, had walked into the bar at 4:30am early Tuesday morning and opened fire on patrons who were on the premises at the time.

Confirming the incident, Mombasa county commander Robert Kitur said that the attack is suspected to have been carried out by the same assailants who killed four people and injured six others in the Soweto area, Likoni in Mombasa.

Kitur however said that eight suspects have been arrested in connection with the Likoni shootings, by a combined contingent of paramilitary and regular police officers, and are being interrogated by detectives.

The suspects are further being questioned on hate leaflets that surfaced after the shootings and are suspected to have been dropped by the attackers as they fled. The leaflets are addressed to a certain community living in the region, that has been told to vacate the area or face more attacks. However, Mombasa county Women’s Representative, Mishi Mboko, called on residents of the coastal city to ignore the leaflets as she and other leaders including Deputy Governor Hezel Katana, Nyali MP Hezron Awiti and Likoni MP Masoud Mwahima condemned the killings.

Mombasa County leaders held a meeting in Likoni last night to find ways to deal with insecurity on the coast. Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa urged residents to provide any information on the attacks to the police.

These two incidents, barely 48 hours apart, have shed a spotlight on the volatile security situation in the Coastal region, even as security agencies battle to secure lives and property in other areas of the country such as the Lamu and Turkana counties.
