Gunman on the run after shooting three dead on tram in Utrecht

A 37-year-old Turkish man named Gokmen Tanis who shot three people dead on a tram at about 10:45 am Monday in the central Dutch city of Utrecht is currently on the run, says the city’s mayor, Jan Von Zanen.

Nine others were injured in what the police described as ‘’a terrorist attack’’

Prime Minister Mark Rutte who described the attack as really disturbing said:

“Our country today has been jolted by an attack.

“Police and prosecutors are looking into what exactly happened.

“What’s known now is that there was shooting at people sitting in a tram,” he added.

During a news conferences on Monday, Dutch anti-terrorism co-ordinator Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg said “We cannot exclude a terrorist motive.”

However, the threat level has been temporarily raised to its highest point in the province of Utrecht.

Utrecht University has closed down its buildings and trains have been barred from running into the city’s central station.

Paramilitary police have been sent to airports and mosques amid increased security concerns.
