Gunman opens fire on Congressman, aide, Capitol officers

A gunman shot and wounded United States House of Representatives Majority Whip and representative for Louisiana’s 1st, Steve Scalise, who was at the second base area during a Republican baseball practice in Alexandria.

The gunman according to reports also shot and wounded two Capitol police officers and the aide of Scalise who was shot in the chest by the suspect who was taken down by Scalise’s security detail and later arrested.

According to reports, Mo Brooks, U.S. Representative for Alabama’s 5th congressional district used his belt as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding for Scalise, who according to reports is in stable condition with the policemen who were shot by the gunman.

The shooting today is the first shooting on a United States representative since Gabrielle Giffords.

On January 8, 2011, Giffords and 18 others were gathered in a supermarket parking lot in Casas Adobes, Arizona when Jared Lee Loughner opened fire killing six people including a 9-year-old girl and federal District Court Chief Judge John Roll.
