Erling Haaland was on target for Manchester City as they beat Chelsea 2-0 in a Premier League encounter at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

In an effort that was later on checked for offside, Haaland had beaten Marc Cucurella and dinked the ball past the keeper to put City ahead in the 18th minute. The goal stood.

Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson thought he had scored an equaliser later in the first half but it was ruled out for offside.

Phil Foden came on in the second half having not started for City. He replaced debutant Savinho, who City bought just before the start of the season.

As the encounter neared the finish, former Chelsea star Mateo Kovacic fired in a 25-yard drive to double the lead for City in the 84th minute.

Manchester City, who won the Premier League last season a fourth consecutive time, have now began their latest defence of the title with a big victory.

In another Premier League game played on Sunday, Brentford defeated Crystal Palace 2-1.
