Hackers erase 6,500 sites from popular web hosting portal

Hackers have taken over the website of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Ripples Nigeria has gathered.

The NBS is the main National Agency responsible for the development and management of official statistics, the authoritative source and custodian of official statistics in Nigeria.

This development is coming barely 24 hours after the agency published a report on the payment of N2.2tr as ransom by Nigerians to kidnappers in one year,

In the report, the bureau indicated that an estimated 51.89 million crime incidents were recorded across Nigerian households during the period.

A few hours after the report, hackers compromised the website of the agency.

A visit to the NBS’s website reveals ‘Page Hacked’ on an otherwise blank page.

Confirming the development, NBS, in a post published on X early on Thursday, December 19, 2024 urged members of the public to ignore any report published on its website until it recovers the website.

“This is to inform the public that the NBS Website has been hacked and we are working to recover it. Please disregard any message or report posted until the website is fully restored. Thank you,” the agency said.

As at the time of the filing of this report, the website is yet to be recovered.
