Hausa/Yoruba clash: Aregbesola announces a 2-day curfew in Ile-Ife

Following the clash between the Hausa and Yoruba communities in Ile-Ife, which reportedly led to the death of at least five people, Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has declared a two-day curfew in the entire Ile-Ife area of the state.

The clashes which mostly took place at Sabo, Lagere and Olaoluwa areas of Ile-Ife, allegedly ensued following accusation that some Hausa men have been raping and harassing wives of Yoruba men in the Sabo area of Ile-Ife.

Consequently, some Yoruba men were said to have on Tuesday attacked the Hausa community. The crisis later snowballed into a deadly one on Wednesday, leaving at least five people dead with over hundred injured.

Some of the victims were burnt beyond recognition.

However, reacting on the ugly incident, Governor Aregbesola in a statement signed by his spokesman, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, declared a two-day curfew.

The statement noted that the curfew will be between 6pm to 7am and takes effect from Wednesday March 8 till Friday March 10.

According to Okanlawon, the curfew became necessary following the breach of the peace in the area which has led to avoidable destruction of lives and properties.

He said, “This is to assure all and sundry that the breach of the peace in Ile Ife is not beyond the control of our highly mobilized security forces.

“To this end, the Governor of the state of Osun, upon receiving reports of the fracas the exact cause of which is still under investigation, has ordered deployment of adequate security forces and is getting minute-by-minute situation reports.

“The Government therefore warns those involved in this act of criminal breach of public peace to end it immediately as the full weight of the law would be brought to bear on anyone arrested,” part of the statement read.
