Hazard, Costa fire Chelsea past West Ham

Goals from Eden Hazard and Diego Costa spurred Chelsea to victory on Monday in their Premier League clash against West Ham at the London Stadium, as they go 10 games without defeat and 10 points clear on the league table.

Hazard, who struck in the opener in 25 minutes when the Blues’ attackers brilliantly exposed Hammers’ defence with a devastating counter-attack, later told reporters after the game, “We want to win the trophy as soon as possible and bring it back to Stamford Bridge.”

It was also Hazard’s corner from the left that turned in early in the second half for Costa to double the lead for the visitors, who maintained a higher ball possession throughout the game.

At stoppage time, however, when Cesc Fabregas was played a horrible pass in midfield and couldn’t get hold of it, Andre Ayew pounced and raced at the away defence to square to Manuel Lanzini, who drilled low into the net, to earn a consolation for the home team.

“They deserved to beat us. It’s very simple. If you want to beat Chelsea then you have to hope for their mistakes and use them,” Hammers Boss Slaven Bilic said after the game.

Chelsea Boss Antonio Conte was happy after the game, as he walked up to address the away fans who were singing “we’re going to win the league” with his fists lifted high.

The Italian is having his first season at the club, and has led his team to 21 league victories so far.

“I think we played a good game. We controlled the game. It’s a pity for the goal we conceded at the end,” Conte said after the match that ended 2-1.

“To give away a clean sheet at the end is not good. We must improve in this situation. But I’m pleased. We showed great concentration and commitment and will to win.”

The Blues will now go on to prepare for their FA Cup quarterfinal meeting against rival Manchester United.

“We must continue. It’s important to rest really well and prepare for the FA Cup game against Manchester United,” Conte added.
