HERDSMEN KILLINGS: Kwara govt raises the alarm, asks police to intensify surveillance in state

Following the wanton killings in some states of the federation, especially the Middle Belt states, Kwara State government has directed the state Police Command to intensify surveillance in the area.

The government has also warned community leaders to avoid inviting herdsmen carelessly into their communities.
The government also told police to ensure that herdsmen and farmers guilty of laws in the land complied with the compensation mechanism earlier put in place by the State Security Council as an instrument to maintain peace between farmers and herdsmen.

This was contained in a statement, Muyideen Akorede, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed on Media and Communications, made available to newsmen on Thursday.

The directive, which according to the statement was issued by the state Security Council chaired by Governor Ahmed at the council meeting, said community leaders must inform the Emir of Ilorin and chairman Kwara State Traditional Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, of any herdsmen or individual they are inviting into the state.

The council had also during the meeting noted reports of cultism and other related activities in the state, and restated its call on landlords to properly scrutinise their prospective tenants before giving them accommodation.

The council further called on the residents in the state to be security conscious and ensure they report any suspicious activities or movement to the appropriate authorities.

On the fight against terrorism in the North-east, the council also asked the security agencies to keep close watch, calling on the citizens of the state to remain vigilant to prevent infiltration of undesirable elements into the state.
