The just-crowned Ligue 1 champions of France, Paris Saint-Germain have dedicated their title to healthcare workers who are in the front line of the battle against coronavirus.

The Paris club were named winners on the French topflight, following the decision by the league governing body after France placed a ban on all sporting events until September.

PSG have now won the league three times in a row, and a ninth time in their history.

In a statement, PSG said: “This 9th league championship title in the club’s history is dedicated to all healthcare staff and to the thousands of front-line professionals working every day to keep the country running.

The club chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi added that French essential workers’ “commitment and self-sacrifice over many weeks have earned our deepest admiration”.

He continued: “We understand, respect and support the decisions taken by the French Government to end the championship. Health, as the government has always said, must be everyone’s priority.

“In these difficult times, I hope that this trophy will bring a little happiness and hope to all our supporters, and I am grateful to them for their unwavering support which helps drive Paris St-Germain forward.”

Meanwhile, Amiens and Toulouse who are bottom two of the league have been relegated, while Lorient – leaders of Ligue 2 – have been promoted to Ligue 1.
