Hijab controversies: Stakeholders offer solutions

Published

on

For the umpteenth time, the controversy surrounding the use of hijab (head scarf) by Muslim female students as part of their school uniforms, last week reared its ugly head. This time, the International School, University of Ibadan (ISI), had its own taste of the crisis when the 55-year-old school was thrown into confusion, following a move by some Muslim parents that their children should wear hijab in school, insisting that it is their right.

But, the strange action, which was rebuffed by the Board of Governors and management of the school, forced the authorities of the institution to abruptly close the school, last week, as some parents allegedly distributed hijab freely to willing Muslim students on the school premises, leading to another round of confusion. Meanwhile, the Muslim parents, New Telegraph learnt, were said to have gone to court to seek legal redress over the matter.

However, the Parent Teachers Association of the school no longer held its meeting earlier scheduled for Saturday, following insistence of the Board of Governors not to allow the wearing of hijab in the school, and the legal redress being sought by the parents.
