Hoodlums kill 243 in Zamfara

Senator Kabiru Marafa, on Wednesday told the Senate that at least 243 people have been killed in the last one month by armed bandits.

According to Senator Marafa who hails from the state, the armed bandits have been operating unhindered for a while and therefore called on security agencies to move in swiftly and end the carnage.

The motion which came under ‘matters of national importance’ was not debated by lawmakers. They are however expected to examine the concerns raised in the next legislative day.

President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki who presided at plenary, urged the sponsor, Senator Marafa to furnish the Senate with more information in order to be properly guided.

It would be recalled that the Zamfara State governor, Abdulaziz Yari, during a state-wide broadcast on the security challenges facing the state, had informed that bandits killed 155 persons in less than a month in the state.

He also said that over 50 persons had been kidnapped during the period.

The governor said that 53 people were killed in Shinkafi local government area; 50 in Maru; 37 in Maradun and 15 in Zurmi local government areas.

He further stated that even though the federal government had launched a military operation against the bandits in July, the criminals had regrouped and returned with vendetta, killing and kidnapping innocent people and demanding large sums of money as ransom.
