House tackles FG over N5, 000 stipend, demands legal framework

The House of Representatives has questioned the strategy adopted by the presidency in the implementation of the N5, 000 stipend being paid to vulnerable Nigerians by the federal government.

The House also challenged the presidency to disclose the total amount earmarked for the programme and how it will be disbursed.

Particularly, the House queried the legal framework adopted for the implementation and the strategy adopted in selecting beneficiaries.

The Representatives had, in August 2016, mandated its joint committee ‎on Legislative Budget and Research, and Poverty Alleviation to investigate the non-usage of the N500 billion earmarked for poverty alleviation under the social safety net in the 2016 budget.

It was gathered that the N180 billion virement approved by the parliament on the request of the presidency was deducted from the N500 billion.

Chairman of the House Committee on Legislative Budget and Research, Hon. Timothy Golu who expressed reservations about payment of the N5, 000 stipend, stated that no legal framework was outlined for the programme.
