Suspected cultists kill five in Imo community

The chairman of Akwanga Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State, Samuel Mashi, on Monday told newsmen how gunmen stormed the place, opened fire on innocent citizens and killed 16 persons including a pregnant woman.

The unfortunate event happened on Sunday night. Mashi said it was about 10pm, at a naming ceremony of a new born baby.

“They just started shooting endlessly on a community that was just having merriment. Unfortunately, 16 people were killed in cold blood for just no reason,” he told newsmen in Akwanga.

According to him, there is currently a security beef up in the affected community and environs to ensure there is no case of reprisal attacks or further breakdown of law and order.

Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Criminal investigation Department (CID), Mohammed Akira, who confirmed the ugly incident, told reporters that the command had mobilized to the area to ensure there is peace.

The attack came after gunmen had also last month attacked and killed many people in Merte and Nandem communities of the same LGA.
