How Oshoala’s success ruined Nigeria at World Cup

In from Nifemi Daniel….

The recent success of star player, Asisat Oshoala, who was voted BBC Woman player of the year seems to have contributed to the exit of the Super Falcons at the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Nigeria crashed out of the tournament after managing a 3-3 draw with Sweden before losing 2-0 and 1-0 respectively to Australia and USA.

Ripples scooped that the media attention focused on the Liverpool Ladies player, led to envy from most of the players especially those not considered good enough by the coaching crew in the starting line-up.

Oshoala who also struggled to carry the team’s responsibilities became frustrated with the coaching crew tactics of playing her as a winger as against her role as a supporting striker, a move which also angered other players in the team.

The 20-year old striker who publicly expressed her displeasure after their 3-3 draw with Sweden in their first match was rebuked by the coaching crew during the team’s brain storming session the next day.

“I feel the other players didn’t help the situation as most of them shy away from the press at the mix zone. Maybe they lack confidence to speak, or they can’t even communicate well in English,” revealed a source in the camp.

Apart from six or seven players, most of the players always shun the media while journalists at the Winnipeg stadium are always comfortable speaking with Asisat Oshoala, Desire Oparanozie, Francisca Ordega, Ngozi Okobi, Onome Ebi, Pepertua Nkwocha and the captain Evenlyn Nwabuoku who are always readily available.

Left to me, this is the end of the road for Coach Okon. He has reached his tactical peak and to me, the fault for our exit in the tournament. He blames the players for a lack of vision in the Australia game. Sir, you are not the one playing the game. Your only job is to ensure the girls are focused at the task at hand, which as you point out, you failed woefully. Please tender your resignation. These girls are better than what we saw at the WC.
