How to defeat terrorism, by Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that to fully eradicate the menace of the Boko Haram sect from the country, Nigeria must learn from the experience of the international community by first tackling the prevalence of violent extremism.

Buhari spoke on Saturday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, during a briefing from a fact-finding team he sent to parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that were bombed by terrorists Friday evening.

The team comprised the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal; the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari; Permanent Secretaries in the Ministries of Health and FCT as well as FCT Police Commissioner.

The president, while reiterating the determination of his government to rid the country of extremism as a way of eradicating violence in the country, also noted, that for terrorism to be uprooted from Nigeria, the country must be rid of violent extremism.

He said, “The defeat of Boko Haram insurgency is in sight; but to remove violence and make the country safe, we must tackle the prevalence of violent extremism. In doing this, we will learn from the experience of the international community”, he stated.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Mallam Garba Shehu, in a statement today, quoted him as directing the security services to raise their surveillance activities in order to meet the challenges of retreating desperate terrorist army and for the general public to remain acutely aware of security in and around them.

Shehu said the president sympathised with the families of the victims of the latest Abuja bombings and those of over 100 others killed in similar incidents few days ago in Borno State.

The president’s fact-finding team visited the Kuje and Nyanya bombing sites. They also visited victims of the incidents at the National Hospital and the Maitama General Hospital.

The team also inspected the wards and mortuaries of the hospitals as well as consoled grieving family members on behalf of President Buhari.
