Huawei CFO gets temporary freedom after China's protest

The chief financial officer of Huawei, Meng Wanzhou has been released on bail by a court in Canada following her arrest about 10-days ago in Vancouver on the orders of the US.

Meng who will however await an extradition hearing, faces US accusations that she misled multinational banks about the company’s business dealings in Iran.

Justice William Ehrcke at a court hearing in Vancouver, on Tuesday granted bail to Meng, subject to a guarantee of C$10m ($7.5m) and other conditions, including wearing an ankle monitor and staying at home from 11pm to 6am.

“The risk of her non-attendance in court (for a future extradition hearing) can be reduced to an acceptable level by imposing the bail conditions proposed by her council,” the judge said, prompting the courtroom packed with her supporters to erupt in cheers.

Reports say China’s foreign ministry summoned the US ambassador hours ago to protest Meng’s detention at the request of he United States and demanded Washington cancel an order for her arrest.

China’s Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng summoned US ambassador Terry Branstad one day after he called in Canadian envoy John McCallum to voice China’s displeasure.
