Hughes replaces Pellegrino at Southampton

English Premier League side, Southampton have hired Mark Hughes as a replacement for Mauricio Pellegrino to take charge of the team until the end of the season.

Pellegrino was sacked on Monday after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle during the weeknd, as the club stay one point above the relegation zone having won just one in 17 games.

Hughes, former Stoke City boss, will take over the Saints, and is faced with the task of helping his new team escape relegation by the end of this season.

“The objective is to make sure we’re a Premier League club next year,” Hughes said.

“It’s a challenge I’m excited by. It’s a great opportunity to come back to a club I know well, and a club I’ve got real affinity with, and I couldn’t turn that down.

“I understand what it takes in this league to win games. But it’s about coming in and being that different voice that will enable the players to recognise and focus on what needs to be done,” he added.

The 54-year old, who started his managerial career with five years in charge of Wales, has also been in charge of Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham and QPR.

Hughes’ first game in charge will be Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final against third-tier club Wigan.
