Hurricane Harvey wreaks more havoc, makes second landfall in Louisiana

Tropical storm hurricane Harvey has continued to leave more destruction in its wake after making a second landfall in the US state of Louisiana as bodies are plucked from the floodwaters caused by the storm.

On Wednesday, Harvey went on to swamp a stretch of coast from Port Arthur, Texas, to Lake Charles, in neighbouring Louisiana even as Texas governor warns that the ‘worst is not yet over’.

“The worst is not yet over for southeast Texas as far as the rain is concerned,” Governor Greg Abbott said, referring to the area that includes Beaumont and Port Arthur.

He warned residents of the storm-hit areas to expect floodwaters to linger for up to a week.

Large parts of Texas remain underwater following record rainfall that forced tens of thousands of people from their homes since coming ashore on Friday with the heavy rains reportedly claiming the lives of at least 25 people.

Hurricane Harvey has also sent more than 32,000 to shelters, turning neighbourhoods into lakes in Houston, the country’s fourth largest city.

National Guard troops have rescued more than 8,500 people since the storm began, Abbott said.

Tropical Storm Harvey, has battered 50 counties in Texas and have left no less than 30,000 residents seeking cover in temporary shelters across the city.

According to director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the floods were brought about by an estimated six months-worth of rain falling in the last three days alone.
