President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he will not allow Nigeria to be “big for nothing”.

The president’s statement was in regard to Nigeria’s financial commitments to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Buhari said Nigeria will live up to her financial commitments to the sub-regional body.

According to a statement on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the president spoke in his capacity as the Chairman of ECOWAS during a briefing by the President of ECOWAS Commission, Jean-Claude Brou, in New York on Thursday.

“Since we don’t want to be big for nothing. We will always look for the money,” Buhari said while pledging Nigeria’s continued financial commitments to the sub-regional body.

He directed Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, to join the President of ECOWAS Commission on a special mission to deepen the peace process in Mali.

Buhari commended the work being done by ECOWAS Commission, noting that “it is always better to talk and resolve issues, rather than be confrontational.
