IBADAN: 5 feared dead in clash between policemen and butchers

A clash between men of the Oyo State Police Command and butchers at the Bodija International Market has led to the death of no less than five victims.

Reports say the deadly clash which witnessed the destruction of property worth millions of naira happened when the policemen allegedly tried to force the butchers out of their place of work.

A butcher who pleaded anonymity said; “We were shot by the police while trying to protect our business. They wanted to force us out of the market which is not fair. We were peaceful but they shot at us.”

However, the death toll of five was denied by Abiodun Odude, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police who said two people were killed.

Odude said, “We understand that at least two people were gunned down and there was an attempt to attack this police station and they quickly mobilised and we are salvaging the situation. The only thing I can tell you is that this morning there was supposed to be an arrest of those people who are selling by the roadside and in the process there was confrontation.”

Reports say the clash ensued after the police moved to enforce an order issued by the Oyo State Government to the butchers to relocate to a modern abattoir in Amosun Village, in the Akinyele area of Ibadan, which they kicked against.
