Ibrahimovic’s goal earns United a point against Liverpool

Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a late goal on Sunday to hold Liverpool to a 1-1 draw in their Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

After a James Milner’s 27th-minute penalty caused by Pogba’s handball, it looked like the visitors were going to hold on and move back to second in the Premier League until Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s late equaliser earned Manchester United a point in a typically thunderous encounter with the Jurgen Klopp’s side.

United boss Jose Mourinho was disappointed his side couldn’t get the three points, and blamed it on the defensive play of his opponents.

“We were the team that attacked and Liverpool were the team that defended. Let’s see if the critics are fair. I enjoyed it but I will obviously be disappointed we didn’t get the three points,” Mourinho said in a post-match media chat.

Kloop, in a post-match chat, said his side came to Old Trafford to win the game and so are not fully satisfied with the result, while admitting that it’s obvious many must have hoped Liverpool would fail woefully against the home team.

“A lot of people before the game would have thought we would get a knock today because United look like a rolling beetle and everything goes in their direction. We know about our problems and situations so seeing a performance like today was nice.

“It is so intense. They play long balls, it was a wild game. There was a lot of action in the last few minutes. We were here to win the game which is why we are not 100% satisfied,” the coach said.

Liverpool are now in third place, seven points adrift of top-flight leaders Chelsea, while United – whose nine-match winning run in all competitions came to an end – are now 12 points off the top.

Liverpool are in FA Cup action when they travel to League Two side Plymouth Argyle for a third-round replay on Wednesday. Their next league game is at home against Swansea on Saturday, with Manchester United visiting at Stoke City on the same day.
