ICC throws out case against Kenya’s Vice President Ruto

Reprieve has come the way of Kenya’s Vice-President William Ruto after the International Criminal Court (ICC) dismissed the case against him.

The embattled VP was standing trial for murder, deportation and persecution charges during the violence that broke out following the elections in 2007 which saw about 1,200 losing their lives.

However, the ICC ruled that there was insufficient evidence to nail Mr Ruto but it also refused to acquit him.

While delivering judgment, one of the one judges declared it a mistrial because of a “troubling incidence of witness interference and intolerable political meddling” in a split ruling.

Mr Ruto denied all the allegations against him in a case that has been dogged by repeated setbacks in the past.

Moments after news filtered in about the  ICC’s ruling concerning Mr Ruto’s case, Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta welcomed the judgement, saying the trial had been a “nightmare” for the nation.
