ICPC re-arraigns ex-Police IG Ehindero over alleged fraud

Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) on Thursday re-arraigned a former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sunday Ehindero, before Apo District High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja over alleged fraud.

The former IGP was re-arraigned alongside a former police commissioner, John Obaniyi, on a six-count charge bordering on misuse of N578 million (N557,995,065) donated by the Bayelsa State Government for the purchase of arms.

The ICPC accused the defendants of diverting the funds into their own separate accounts, where the funds generated an interest of N16, 412,315, which they were said to have used for personal objectives.

The defendants were also accused of lying to officials of ICPC by claiming that the interest the funds generated was used for official purposes.

When the charges were read out to the defendants, they pleaded not guilty.

The ICPC had first arraigned the defendants in 2012 for the alleged offences. But they filed a preliminary objection and challenged the competence of the charge against them and asked the trial court to suspend their trial pending the determination of the appeal at the higher court.

The matter later got to the Supreme Court, and in its ruling on the case last December, the apex court held that the defendants should return to the trial court and face the charge entered against them.

On Thursday after the defendants pleaded not guilty, the court admitted them on bail based on the previous conditions and adjourned the matter to June 19.
