IGBONLA MODEL COLLEGE: Weary parents scamper to raise ransom for kidnapped kids

The concerned parents whose kids were kidnapped at about 6am on Thursday, May 25 at the school premises of Igbonla Model College, Epe, by masked militants have become weary.

According to reports, the parents are not holding on to the pledge by security operatives and the Lagos State Government that their kids will be released unhurt and have taken it upon their strides to raise money to pay the ransom of N100 million for the six abducted students.

Reports say the parents have set-up a committee among themselves to raise funds through contributions by each parent as well as aid from relations and friends to facilitate the release of the children.

“It is already nine days today (Saturday), and our children are still in captivity despite the government’s assurance to rescue them. Our minds will not be at rest without seeing these children,” one of the parents who didn’t want to the identified said.

Continuing, she added that; “The kidnappers are now demanding N100m and they insist we should meet with the school authorities and the state government to pay. But they said they would not pay any ransom.

“All the parents have met again and we have decided to raise whatever amount we can through individual contributions. We have tasked ourselves to call on friends and relatives to assist.”

However, the move by the concerned parents is being frowned at by ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, who revealed that the police is intensifying efforts to release the students.

“We are using intelligence report to get those pupils rescued safely. Apart from this, there is no information we can share for now. The command is not aware of the parents’ move and does not encourage payment of ransom,” he said.

Recall that the kidnappers reached out to concerned parents about 24-hours ago informing them that the ransom for the release of their kids has been reduced from N600 million to N100m.

They had initially demanded for N1 billion.
