IGP bows to pressure, promotes dead hero cops

One policeman, Chukwudi Iboko who was killed during a robbery incident at a branch of Zenith Bank in Owerri, Imo State and another colleague, Sunday Agbo are to be posthumously honoured following a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, who has approved promotion for the slain policemen.

Another surviving policeman, Sergeant Otu Attang, (who is being treated at the police hospital in Owerri) according to Chris Ezike, the Imo State Commissioner of Police, will also be given a special promotion for his gallantry.

“We have done the needful; the command has recommended them (the slain policemen) for post-humous promotion and the one injured for a special promotion and the IG is not aversed to the idea,” he stated.
Agbo sustained injuries when he engaged the bank robbers, killing one of them in February, but the video from the CCTV camera went viral last week, prompting calls from Nigerians that the cop be honoured for his gallantry.

He reportedly died in April from the wounds sustained during the incident.

In a related development, a GoFundMe fund raising campaign for the family of Sergeant Chukwudi Iboko, one of the policemen who lost his life during the bank robbery attack which was launched by a Newspapers house and other social activists in the country, led by Kayode Ogundamisi has witnessed overwhelming contributions.

Initially, the campaign set out to raise the sum of $15,000 for the late Iboko’s family of eight children and a wife, but as at 11.08 pm on Monday, the sum of $16,476 had been raised on the fundraising platform by 390 people.

Reports say the partners who initiated the fund raising campaign would as soon as possible name three non-governmental organisations that would effectively manage the funds raised for Iboko’s family to ensure transparency and accountability.
