IGP Idris reinstates Kogi CP removed over Melaye’s gunrunning case

The Commissioner of Police (CP) in Kogi State, Ali Janga, who was removed following the escape of suspects in Senator Dino Melaye’s gunrunning allegation has been reinstated by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris.

The development was made known to newsmen on Thursday in Lokoja, Kogi State capital by the state police command’s spokesman, ASP William Aya. He said that Janga resumed office as the state CP on April 3 on the order of the police boss.

Following the escape of six suspects, including Kabiru Seidu a.k.a. Osama and Nuhu Salisu a.k.a. Small, both of who allegedly accused Senator Melaye as their gun supplier from police custody on March 28, the IGP had removed Janga as the state CP and replaced him with Sunday Ogbu.

But Aya said that Janga’s reinstatement came after he was able to re-arrest the suspect within the one week ultimatum given to him by the IGP to ensure the bandits are brought back into police custody.

Aya went further to say that all the six suspects that escaped from lawful police custody on March 28 had been re-arrested, adding that 13 persons that aided the escape of the suspects had been arrested in Lokoja.

Among those who aided the suspects’ escape that have been arrested according to Aya include commercial tricycle operators that ferried them to safety after their escape and the owners of the houses where they slept after their escape from custody.

He said that all the suspects would be charged to court after conclusion of investigation.

The Kogi State police spokesman added that the 13 policemen who were on duty on the day of the incident had gone to the police headquarters for interrogation as directed by the IGP and have started returning to their duty posts.
