IGP Idris says Benue killings were a result of communal crisis

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, has described the New Year attacks in Guma and Logo local government areas of Benue State, which left more than 20 persons dead as a communal clash.

The IGP who stated this when he spoke with State House correspondents soon after speaking with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, faulted those claiming Nigeria is not secured.

“Obviously I think Nigeria is well secured, you have to be frank with us,” he said.

Idris who was unable to mention the communities which according to him, were involve in the clash, however explained that Fulani herdsmen were part of the community.

He said, “Obviously it is communal crisis, herdsmen are part of the community. They are Nigerians and are part of the community, are they not?”

On the reason he visited the president, he said, “You know any time we meet Mr. President you know the area of discussion is how to have effective security of the nation.”

Responding to question on what his doing over the New Year attacks allegedly carried out by herdsmen, he said, “You know I deployed my DIG there yesterday (Thursday) and you know we have different stages of police.

“You have the AIG in Benue, Commissioner of Police in Benue and all of them are putting their heads together to see how we address this issue of community problems in Benue.”

Responding to allegation that Police has been reactionary in killings involving herdsmen instead of being proactive, Idris said, “Let’s use the example of Benue, you know most of these states where you have several languages, you know it’s an issue of communal misunderstanding.

“I think what we should be praying for is for Nigerians to learn to live in peace with one another, I think it’s very important.”
