The Joint Military Task Force in an operation at the oil bearing communities of the Awarra/Assa in Ohaji/ Egbema council area of Imo State have reportedly gunned down five suspected members of the Red Scorpion militant group operating in the area.

Reports say the militants who were at their hideout were caught unawares by the task force personnel who sneaked into their domain in a tipper truck, shooting dead five militants on the spot, while others escaped with gun shot wounds.

The state Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Enwerem, who confirmed the presence of the task force in the state said the force had always been on standby to quell crisis in the state and also checkmate the activities of militants.

Incoming reports say the invasion of the hideout of the militants may not be unconnected with the presidential directive to the Military High Command to flush out all militant groups in Niger Delta with immediate effect.
