India breaks record set by Russia, sends 104 satellites into space

World’s second largest populated country India has successfully broken a previous record set by Russia when it launched no less than 104 satellites into orbit with a single rocket.

The development is India’s latest triumph of its famously frugal space agency as scientists who gathered for the historic launch at the southern spaceport of Sriharikota burst into applause as the head of India’s Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced all the satellites had been ejected.

“My hearty congratulations to the ISRO team for this success,” ISRO director Kiran Kumar told scientists who had gathered at the observatory to watch the progress of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

Immediately after the launch of the rocket which took off at 9:28am (03:58 GMT) and cruised at a speed of 27,000km per hour, ejecting all the 104 satellites into orbit in around 30 minutes, according to ISRO, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi immediately congratulated the scientists for the feat.

“This remarkable feat by @isro is yet another proud moment for our space scientific community and the nation. India salutes our scientists.” The Indian PM tweeted.
