Indian minister arrested over fake degree

Officials in India say a law minister from an opposition anti-corruption party at the state level was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of forging his law degree certificate.

Jitendra Tomar, law minister at state level for the territory of Delhi, allegedly never obtained the degree he listed on his nomination for local elections in February.

His Aam Aadmi anti-corruption campaign party (AAP) won a landslide in the Delhi polls, beating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that ruled at the federal level.

“The arrest is illegal, the matter is in court. What was the need to arrest him?’’ Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia, told newsmen.

Delhi police chief, BS Bassi, said the move was “within the parameters of law.”

The arrest came after the Bar Council of Delhi registered a police complaint against Tomar, who faces charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy and could face up to seven years in prison if convicted.

“This is nothing but vendetta politics,” said spokesman Ashutosh, who goes by just one name.
