Indian Wells: Federer beats Nadal again, as Djokovic crashes out

Tennis superstar Roger Federer played superbly on Thursday to claim a third consecutive win over rival Rafael Nadal for the first time in his career to advance to the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open.

The Swiss, 35, won 6-2 6-3 to follow up his Australian Open final victory over the Spaniard two months ago, when Federer won his 18th Grand Slam title.

Nadal, 30, had built his success against Federer over the years on attacking the Swiss player’s backhand, but Federer turned his weaker wing into a weapon in the Australian Open final, and did the same in Indian Wells.

Federer said: ”I did very well today, I’m so pleased I’m able to step into the court and play super aggressive. ”Coming over the backhand has been part of that.”

Elsewhere, Nick Kyrgios proved once again what a prodigious talent he is after dismantling Novak Djokovic for the second time in two weeks to set up a quarter final with Roger Federer.

Kyrgios had defeated the five-time BNP Paribas Open champion at the Mexican Open earlier this year, and now again in the second time they are meeting in the sport.

”I am serving really well, that is creating chances for me to put pressure on their service games,” Kyrgios said after his victory.

“My mentality is improving and I am trying really hard to fight for every point and just compete.”

Djokovic, who is widely regarded as the greatest returner to ever play the game, was frustrated throughout the tie as his 19-match winning streak in California came to an end.
