ESCAPE OF SUSPECTS: Melaye to sue IGP, as police notifies Interpol

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Kogi State has fixed the last Saturday in April as the day it will start the recall process of embattled Senator Dino Melaye.

The announcement came after the Court of Appeal had last week sacked an appeal, by the senator representing Kogi West at the Senate, challenging the move to recall him.

Kogi State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Professor James Apam, said that based on the appeal court’s ruling, that the electoral body can commence the recall process.

According to him, the last Saturday of April will be a day for verification, which will be followed by a referendum in line with the electoral laws, on the first Saturday in the month of May.

The state INEC REC stated this when he spoke at a stakeholders’ forum on Wednesday in Lokoja.

“On this day (last Saturday of April), the commission will endeavour to invite all those who have signed the recall register to come forward and identify their signature,” he said.

“If this process is successful, the commission will proceed to the next stage where a referendum of all registered voters would be conducted.

“Here, voters will be asked to vote either ‘yes ’ or ‘no ’ to the question of whether they want Senator Dino Melaye recalled. If the answer meets the constitutional requirements of 51 per cent ‘yes,’ the process moves to the next stage; but if it fails, the process stops,” Apam said.

He added that as a law-abiding entity, that INEC will not do anything outside the dictates of the law, because “that is why we have to wait till after the judgement before going ahead with the process.”
