The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is currently battling with over 1,689 court cases from the 2019 general elections.

The commission’s National Electoral Commission in charge of Niger, Kogi and Nasarawa states, Mallam Mohammed Haruna, disclosed this on Thursday in Lafia during the state level post-election review retreat.

According to him, 890 cases arose from pre-election matters while 799 cases are currently at different election petition tribunal across the country as post-election matters.

While blaming the political parties for the pre-election cases,  Haruna said the cases before the tribunals showed that much still needed to be done to improve on the electoral process.

“We are here to review what we did for this year’s general election with a view to improving on our subsequent outing.

“You will agree with me that any document is work in progress, you can never get it perfectly,” Haruna.

While speaking, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Dr Uthman Ajidagba, said the state with 26 cases shows the level of satisfaction of the election in the state.

“That we have this small number means that there was a level of satisfaction but some people just want to prove points by going to the tribunal,” he said.
