INEC expects 85m voters by 2019, says 74m already registered

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that as at second week of January, about 74 million Nigerian voters have been registered.

The commission however said that it was hoping to register up to 80 to 85 million voters before the general elections in 2019.

The commission’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mr Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi , who disclosed this in a statement on Friday, quoted INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, as revealing this during the 15th edition of the Daily Trust Dialogue event.

Mahmood was represented at the event by INEC national commissioner and chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Mr Solomon Soyebi.

According to the commission’s chairman, due to the on-going nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), 80 to 85 million registered voters is possible before the 2019 general elections.

The INEC chairman who noted that efforts have been rigorously made to improve the electoral process, assured Nigerians that only their votes would determine the outcome of the 2019 general elections and beyond.

Further stating that INEC was not unaware of the enormous responsibility of conducting elections in a democracy, Mahmood said that the commission would continue to engage all stakeholders to ensure an all-inclusive process.

The chairman also said that INEC is going to adhere strictly to the election Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2019 polls as recently released.
