INEC fixes date for Osun governorship run-off

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed a date for the run-off governorship election in Osun State.

The commission has slated Thursday September 27th for contest between the two leading parties to determine who rules the state for the next four years.

The electoral umpire had on Sunday declared the election inconclusive based on a technicality, after its Returning Officer and Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof Joseph Fowape, announced the final results.

The run-off between candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Gboyega Oyetola, and that of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ademola Adeleke, is to hold in that in areas where elections was cancelled.

Afuape had stated that there were irregularities which marred the election at some polling units in Ife North, Ife South and Orolu local government areas, including cases of card reader malfunctioning, and ballot box snatching, among others.

Quoting INEC’s Standing Rules at the commission’s headquarters in Osogbo, the state capital, Fowape, said since the margin between the two leading candidates was lower than the registered cancelled votes, the election had to be declared inconclusive.
