While Senator Dino Melaye is being treated in a hospital following injuries he sustained in a bid to escape the custody of the security operatives, the Independent National Electoral Commission has re-commenced the process to recall him from the Senate.

Melaye is currently having issues with the Nigerian Police, over allegations of false assassination claim and gunrunning.

Melaye had sustained injuries after jumping out of a police vehicle on Tuesday, in a bid to avoid being taken to Kogi State over his police issues.

While he is still being treated allegedly handcuffed to a bed at the National Hospital in Abuja, INEC on Wednesday announced the commencement of verification exercise of voters in Melaye’s constituency, as part of the process to recall the Kogi West senator

INEC’s decision followed the ruling of the Appeal Court which gave the electoral body the go-ahead to carry out the exercise.

The exercise, scheduled for Saturday, April 28th, is in line with the constitutional provision that 50+1 registered voters must be confirmed to have signed the recall petition register.

Making the development known in a statement in Lokoja, Kogi State resident electoral commissioner, Prof. James Apam, said that INEC had put all necessary modalities in place to ensure a hitch-free exercise.

He said, “The verification exercise, which is the first in the line of activities to be carried out in a recall process, will be done on 28th April, 2018 in 560 polling units in the Kogi West Senatorial District.

“The result of the verification exercise would determine whether or not to proceed to the next stage, which is referendum.”
