Henry Onyekuru has been handed a late call up to the Super Eagles squad for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against South Africa billed for next week.

The 21-year old, who plays for Galatasaray in Turkey, will serve as a replacement for Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo, who picked up an injury in China on Wednesday.

The Nigeria Football Federation revealed this via a tweet on its official Twitter handle on Thursday morning.

“@henryconyekuru replaces injured @ighalojude for game against South Africa. #SoarSuperEagles #Team9jaStrong #Afcon2019Q,” the tweet read.

Ighalo, who has scored six goals in his last three appearances for Nigeria, has also contributed 21 goals for Changchun Yatai in the CSL this season.

Onyekuru only returned to action last weekend for his Turkish club after picking up an injury in Nigeria’s last qualifying fixture against Libya in Sfax, Tunisia.

He was however in action in the club’s 2-0 loss to German club, Schalke 04 in a UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday night.

Nigeria sit at the top of the Group E with 9 points from four matches in the 2019 AFCON qualifier, and are set to seal their qualification for the tournament if they win at Johannesburg.

The Eagles will take on their South African counterparts on November 17, before playing a friendly with the Cranes of Uganda days after in Nigeria.
