More intrigues as Police IGP goes after IBB’s spokesman Afegbua

Babangida’s spokesman, Afegbua, turns himself in for police interrogation

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has declared Kazeem Afegbua, the spokesman of former militray president, Ibrahim Babangida, wanted over the statement he issued on behalf of his principal on Sunday.

The development is coming after the former military leader, amid the controversies that trailed the statement by Afegbua, allegedly confirmed to Thisday newspaper that the statement by his spokesman stands.

However, despite Babangida’s alleged acceptance of his spokesman’s statement, the IG in a statement through the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood on Monday, went ahead to order for the arrest of Afegbua.

Critics have therefore questioned why the police have insisted on going after Afegbua, ignoring Babangida who has allegedly admitted ownership of the content of the public letter.

Reacting to his being declared wanted, Afegbua has wondered aloud the basis for the police proclamation, when as a public figure, the police know where he resides, and can come around anytime they want, to see or arrest him, as the case may be.

The police statement read, “The IGP has ordered the arrest of Kashim Afegbua for making false statements, defamation of character and for an act capable of instigating public disturbance throughout the country.

“He is therefore declared wanted by the Nigeria Police Force and should report at the nearest police station anywhere he is in the country,” the statement read.

Afegbua had on Sunday released a statement on behalf of Babangida, where the former military head advised President Muhammadu Buhari not to bother seeking for a second term in office, and called on Nigerians to do away with analogue leaders but to support as president in 2019 a candidate who is in tune with the digital age.

However, controversies ensued after another statement purportedly written by the former military leader denied the earlier statement by his spokesman.

Meanwhile Afegbua, who had been Babangida’s spokesman for over 14 years, had insisted that the statement was issued with the full permission of his principal.

He alleged that the rebuttal statement emanated from some overzealous people around Babangida.
