Iran blocks social media access after video of two dead protesters go viral

A viral internet video of two dead demonstrators who passed away in Dorud, Iran after sustaining gunshot wounds fired by anti-riot police has forced authorities to block access to Instagram and Telegram social media Apps in the country.

Reports say authorities in Iran are imposing the ban as a security measure during rare anti-government protests over rising cost of food and fuel prices which has gone violent.

According to Iranian state TV, Irib News, the government said social media in the country would be temporarily limited as the government warned protesters they would pay a price if days of unrest continued.

“With a decision by the Supreme National Security Council, activities of Telegram and Instagram are temporarily limited,” the Irib News report said, without elaborating.

Described as the largest in nearly a decade, demonstrations have continued for the third consecutive day in a number of cities across Iran, despite officials calling on citizens to avoid “illegal gatherings”.

The protests sparked by anger over Iran’s ailing economy, have gained momentum in a number of cities across Iran with another video footage posted on Twitter by the New-York based Center for Human Rights in Iran showing police in riot gear clashing with protesters outside the gates to the Tehran University.
