Iran set to anger US by boosting missile capacity despite sanctions

The pariah Asian nation of Iran is set to anger the United States of America after it announced that it is planning to increase its missile capacity and acquire modern fighter jets and submarines.

According to Mohammad Ahadi, Iran’s deputy defence minister for international affairs, the move is part of efforts to expand its defence capabilities.

Ahadi made the announcement in a speech to a group of foreign military attaches, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported on Saturday.

“Increasing ballistic and cruise missile capacity … and the acquisition of next-generation fighters and heavy and long-range vessels and submarines with various weapons capabilities are among the new plans of this ministry,” he said in the capital, Tehran.

The announcement is coming days after a report by the United Nations’ atomic watchdog revealed that Iran continues to comply with the terms of its nuclear deal with world powers.

According to the quarterly report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran kept to the caps placed on its uranium enrichment levels and enriched uranium stocks as part of the deal.

IAEA inspectors were given access to all sites in the country requiring a visit to verify Iran’s ongoing compliance with the restrictions, the report said.
