Iran warns of “wrong approaches” as Trump returns to White House

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, on Thursday, expressed concerns over Donald Trump’s return to the presidency, stating that the U.S. elections offer an opportunity to review past mistakes. “We had bitter experiences with various U.S. governments’ past policies and approaches. Elections are an opportunity to review the wrong approaches of the past,” Baghaei said.

Trump’s victory has sparked worries that he may enforce stricter oil sanctions against Iran, which he initially imposed in 2018 after withdrawing from the nuclear pact between Tehran and global powers. This move could escalate tensions between the two nations.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has previously stated that Tehran is willing to resolve its nuclear standoff with the West, which accuses Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons. However, Iran maintains that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes.

The outgoing administration, led by President Joe Biden, attempted to revive the nuclear deal but failed to reach a new agreement. Trump has not indicated whether he will revisit the issue, leaving Iran cautious. “What is important for Iran will be how we evaluate the actions of the U.S. government,” Baghaei added.

Background on U.S.-Iran Relations

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was signed in 2015 between Iran, the U.S., and other global powers. Trump withdrew from the agreement in 2018.

The U.S. imposed oil sanctions on Iran, which have severely impacted Iran’s economy.

Relations between the U.S. and Iran have remained strained, with concerns over Iran’s nuclear program and regional influence.
