Irate youths beat policeman to death for killing of okada man during illegal arrest

A police sergeant attached to the Elere Police Division of the Nigerian Police Force lost his life when he according to reports embarked on a fake raid with some of his colleagues on okada riders operating around Agege area of Lagos State.

Reports say the raid turned blood as the policeman, a Kogi State indigene who is popularly known as Sunday in the area was beaten brutally and then stabbed a number of times before being left for dead at Ile-Epo Bus Stop, Oke Odo by irate youths.

According to an eyewitness who pleaded anonymity, the incident happened when the policemen arrived the area in a commercial bus and attempted to seize the motorcycle of a yet-to-be-identified okada rider who himself tried to flee the scene when he spotted the cops.

While recounting the story, the resident said; “As he (okada rider) tried to turn the other way, a tipper speeding along hit him. People rushed at him but when they picked him off the floor, he was unconscious and bleeding heavily. Nobody in this area knows the okada rider.

“Immediately he was hit, the policemen saw how bad it was and tried to run away. But this angered the youths. Some of them picked bottles and sticks and chased after the policemen. That officer (Sunday) was the only one they could catch up with. We got news later in the day that the okada rider did not survive.”

The incident caused an outrage as irate youths descened on Sergeant Sunday who was beaten with sticks and broken bottles as he sustained several stab wounds in the process.

A police source later revealed that Sergeant Sunday also gave up the ghost at a hospital in Yaba after he couldn’t survive the stab wounds sustained in the attack by irate youths.

Confirming the incident, spokesperson, for the Lagos State Police Command, Dolapo Badmos, informed that the team of policemen was in the area on a routine patrol when the okada rider recognised the policeman and tried to flee on sighting Sergeant Sunday.

“The okada rider ran into an oncoming vehicle at the junction and the hoodlums seized the opportunity to attack the policeman.

“We have arrested eight of the suspects and charged them to court”, she revealed.

You are saying rubbish. Ayodeji is merely saying, the power of gun makes them misbehave and now you are saying we all do same, does that make any sense .

The police are stupid for arresting people who killed the policeman. Those angry mob did the right thing. Eye for eye, tooth for tooth.

Jungle justice is disallowed. So the police must make sure those suspected angry mob should face the wrath of the law dearly.
