A French police officer and his wife were killed at their home in the northwestern Paris suburb by a knife wielding assailant who was later shot dead.
Reports say the assailant killed the police officer outside his house and later took the officer’s wife and son hostage when security forces raided the house.
The assailant later killed the officer’s wife before he was shot dead by police officers who rescued the child in an attack claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group, which said the assailant was one of its fighters.
French interior ministry spokesman said all attempts to negotiate with the assailant proved abortive thereby forcing security forces to raid the house in the Paris suburb, killing the suspect in the process.
“Negotiations were unsuccessful, a decision was made to launch an assault,” Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said, according to the Reuters news agency.
Officials have not revealed the identity of the victims.
