Italian coastguards recover 5 bodies, rescues 534 from Mediterranean Sea

At least five bodies of drowned migrants and 534 others were recovered from the Mediterranean Sea by Italian coastguards following a number of rescue operations carried out on Thursday.

According to the coastguards, the rescued migrants were picked up from two large rubber dinghies and nine other smaller boats.

Vessels from the Italian and German navy joined four ships run by humanitarian groups in the various rescue missions.

According to statistics, an estimated 2,742 men, women and children have died this month alone trying to make the dangerous journey from Libya to Italy.
