After weeks of silence about the whereabout of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwase, the Itsekiri kingdom has formally announced his passing away, and a new Olu designate named.

One of the late Olu’s younger brothers, Prince Godfrey Ikenwoli Emiko (Abiloye), was named as the Olu-designate.

This were done at a ceremony held at the Ode-Itsekiri (Big Warri), the traditional headquarters of the Itsekiri.

Announcing both the passage of Atuwatse II and the choice of Prince Ikenwoli to the Itsekiri National Congress, the eldest member of the Olu Advisory Council, Chief Tesigiweno Yahya Pessu, also performed the traditional ‘breaking of the calabash’, which represents the death of the king.
