ITTF Nigeria Open: Egyptian duo win men's, women's singles titles

Egyptian table tennis star, Omar Assar, has won the men’s singles title at the 2017 ITTF Challenge, Seamaster Nigeria Open at the Teslim Balogun Stadium on Sunday.

Assar defeated India’s Sarthak Gandhi in straight sets 6-11, 11-13, 6-11, 8-11 in the final to win the title for the fourth time in Lagos.

“It is wonderful,” he said when asked how it feels winning the title for the fourth time; adding that his next focus is the start of the German table tennis League.

Meanwhile, Assar’s compatriot, Dina Meshref, won the women’s singles final, beating Olga Kulikova of Russia in straight sets 4-11, 14-16, 10-12, 6-11.

The highest-ranked African woman table tennis player is winning the title for the first time in Lagos, as she had lost out in the final on two successive years.

Meshref, however, lost in the women’s double finals with fellow Egyptian, Yousra Helmy, to Hungarian pair of Balint Bernadett and Pergel Szandra earlier on Sunday.
