Iwobi becomes 7th Nigerian player to win FA Cup

Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi has become the seventh Nigerian player to lift the English FA Cup after his club Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 in the 2016-17 final at Wembley on Saturday.

Goals from Alexis Sanches and Aaron Ramsey were enough to beat the Premier League champions, whose only goal was scored by Diego Costa.

Iwobi was an unused substitute in the game, as his Nigeria teammate Victor Moses was sent off for diving midway into the second half, which reduced Chelsea to 10 men.

The 21-year old joins six other Nigerians including John Fashanu (Wimbledon: 1988), Daniel Amokachi (Everton: 1995), Celestine Babayaro (Chelsea: 2000), Nwankwo Kanu (Arsenal: 2002, 2003, Portsmouth: 2008), John Utaka (Portsmouth: 2008) and Eagles captain Mikel Obi (Chelsea: 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012) to win one of the oldest football competitions in the world.

It was Arsenal’s 13th FA Cup title and the only title they were able to clinch to in a very tough season that saw them miss a Champions League spot for the first time in 20 years.

“Feels great to end the season on a high. Our Fans were unbelievable today. Back To North London with the FA Cup,” Iwobi wrote on his Twitter handle after the victory.
