JAPAN: Avalanche claims 6 students who went on mountain climbing trip

Six high school student who went on a mountain-climbing outing trip in Nasu ski resort in Tochigi prefecture, Japan have been declared dead after they were engulfed in an avalanche.

According to local authorities and police, the avalanche had hit early on Monday on the mountain in Tochigi prefecture north of Tokyo.

Six high school students were found with no vital signs, while a total of seven were hit by the avalanche. Three other students were injured, while three teachers on the excursion could not immediately be contacted, public broadcaster NHK reported.

Tochigi prefectural authorities said about 50 students from seven high schools were on the mountaineering trip.
