Japan, South Korea in diplomatic row over statue

Asian neighbours Japan and South Korea are currently involved in a diplomatic row over a statue symbolising victims of Japanese wartime s*x slavery.

The row has now forced Japan to recall its ambassador to South Korea to protest against the placing of the statue outside Japan’s consulate in the city of Busan.

According to Japan’s chief government spokesman, Yoshihide Suga, the row has now resulted in the suspension of talks between both countries over a new currency swap agreement.

“The Japanese government will continue to strongly urge the South Korean government as well as municipalities concerned, to quickly remove the statue of the girl,” Suga said on Friday.
