JERUSALEM: Palestine recalls its US envoy over controversial decision

The decision by President Donald Trump to recognise Jerusalem as the new capital of Israel has forced authorities in Palestine to recall its envoy to the United States.

Palestinian officials have previously said they will “no longer accept” any peace plan put forward by the US following the unilateral declaration on December 6 by Trump.

According to Riyad al-Malki, the Palestinian foreign minister, discussions would take place “to set the decisions needed by the Palestinian leadership in the coming period regarding our relations with the US”.

The decision by Trump to recognise Jerusalem as the new capital of Israel has also been described as “dangerous” and “insulting” by Palestinian Christian leaders.

The US move is offensive to “Christians and Muslims around the world who consider Jerusalem as an incubator of their most sacred, spiritual and national heritage”, Atallah Hanna, the archbishop of Jerusalem’s Greek Orthodox church, said in a statement on Saturday.

Protests have been sparked across the Muslim world after the December 6th announcement which has drawn the ire of many Palestinians especially.

Trump’s Jerusalem decision which has been declared null and void by the General Assembly of the United Nations has sparked anger across the Muslim world and has drawn the ire of many Palestinians especially.
